- In race between Fred Segal, 66, and Beau Simon, 18, for Broward Soil and Water Conservation District, we give the edge to age and experience over youth and ambition.
- The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office has come far under Ric Bradshaw, but progress has slowed in recent years. In his fifth term, we hope Bradshaw, who has a lock on this race, will kickstart needed reforms.
- Joe Scott, a West Point graduate with a strong work ethic and a serious, businesslike approach, will restore professionalism and stability to the Broward Supervisor of Elections office.
- The Sun Sentinel editorial board cannot endorse any of the three candidates for Broward Sheriff, a position we do not come to lightly. To send a message that the system of electing Broward’s chief law enforcement officer is shattered, we encourage voters to withhold a vote in this race.
- The Sun Sentinel editorial board encourages a “No” vote on the retention of Florida Supreme Court Justice Carlos Mu?iz and Fourth District Court of Appeal Judges Alan O. Forst and Mark Klingensmith. We enthusiastically recommend a “yes” vote for Fourth District Judge Martha Warner, one of Florida’s most respected judges.
- Broward County wants voters to approve a charter change that would allow it to ignore city zoning laws when building bus depots, maintenance yards and perhaps a light rail system. The Sun Sentinel Editorial Board encourages voters to reject this power grab.

- History says Maria Sachs will stand up for the little guy against the pressures of big-monied interests.
- The Sun Sentinel endorses Palm Beach County Commissioner Mack Bernard for re-election, knowing him to be a strong advocate for affordable housing and people of lesser means.
- In ordinary times, the position of county mayor, chosen by the county commission from among themselves, holds a largely ceremonial role. But these are not ordinary times, and with emergency powers, Palm Beach County Mayor Dave Kerner has governed effectively.
- Anne Gannon has been Palm Beach County's tax collector for 14 years. Here's why voters should give her another four.
- Maureen Porras would put the priorities of everyday Floridians first. That is why the Sun Sentinel recommends voters elect Porras in Florida House District 105.
- Cindy Polo, a proud progressive with strong convictions, deserves re-election to the Florida House District 103.
- After eight years in the Florida House, Lori Berman has blossomed in the Florida Senate. The Sun Sentinel endorses her re-election in District 31 because she stands up for public education, addressing climate change and helping her constituents.
- The Sun Sentinel endorses state Rep. Tina Polsky for Florida Senate, District 29. Her opponent is untested. Polsky advocates sound policies on the issues facing Florida — the pandemic, unemployment insurance, environmental catastrophe and more.
- The Sun Sentinel endorses Harold Pryor for Broward State Attorney because the times we live in argue for some much-needed and long-awaited diversity and reform in the office.

- To improve the focus and decorum of the Hallandale Beach City Commission, the Sun Sentinel editorial board encourages voters to select Cynthia Cabrera for Seat 3.
- Despite the unseemly mess of her public corruption trial, Joy Cooper, who was found not guilty of the charges, is best positioned to lead Hallandale Beach as mayor.
- Pompano Beach District 1 Commissioner Andrea McGee has a pro-growth record, but she's more qualified than either of her rivals. The Sun Sentinel editorial board endorses Andrea McGee for re-election.
- The Sun Sentinel editorial board endorses Rhonda Eaton for Pompano Beach City Commission, District 2, a race that offers a stark choice between smart growth and no growth.

- The Sun Sentinel endorses Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Steve Glassman for re-election in District 2.
- Amendment 5 would give Florida homeowners three years, instead of two, to transfer their accrued “Save Our Homes” benefit to a new home. Amendment 6 would let surviving spouses of veterans with service-connected disabilities keep the property tax discounts on their homes, and take the benefits to a new home.
- Dark-money interests are pushing Amendment 4 to make voter approval of constitutional amendments even harder. Amendment 2 is an anti-immigration dog whistle, unneeded because Florida law already says only citizens age 18 and older can vote.
- The Sun Sentinel encourages Florida voters to support Amendment 2, which would gradually increase the minimum wage to $15 by 2026; and Amendment 3, which would open primary elections to voters of all parties, with the top two vote-getters advancing to the general election.
- There’s no one better than Debbie Wasserman Schultz to address the challenges we face with health care, climate change, immigration, racial injustice and income inequality. Her opponent, Carla Spalding, is an ideologue who lacks experience and offers only vague promises.
- U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings fights for the priorities of District 20 — universal access to health care, immigration reform and racial justice. His opponent has a superficial grasp of national issues.
- Rep. Ted Deutch has the right priorities and the right policies, and the Sun Sentinel endorses his re-election to the U.S. House, District 22.
- The South Florida Sun Sentinel endorses U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel for re-election over her radical opponent, Laura Loomer.
ENDORSEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS ELECTIONS
The South Florida Sun Sentinel Editorial Board's endorsements in the local elections that appeared on the Aug. 18, 2020 ballot.
- Of the six candidates running in the Democratic primary for Broward County sheriff, there are only two viable candidates, Scott Israel and Gregory Tony. Neither is ideal, but the better candidate is Scott Israel.
- In the Republican primary for Broward County sheriff, H. Wayne Clark is considerably more thoughtful than his challenger, Casimiro Navarro, about the needed changes in discipline and training, more conscious of BSO’s management challenges, and more aware of its diverse responsibilities.
- Incumbent Broward County Commissioner Tim Ryan is vastly more qualified for the job than challenger Rita Lipof, a librarian who until recently worked for the county library system. She was fired in June.
- Dale Holness, the incumbent District 9 Broward County Commissioner, has the Sun Sentinel’s endorsement in this race. There’s really no option.
- The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office has come far under Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, who is seeking his fifth term. We hope that four more years will bring even more progress.
- In a crowded field for Broward supervisor of elections, Chad Klitzman rises above the rest. He’s smart, hard-working and best prepared to make the office deliver safe and fair elections.
- Since Gov. DeSantis appointed her to be Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections, Wendy Sartory Link has engendered confidence and run the office well. In a race against Paulette Armstead, she is the better candidate.
- Democrats should pick Maureen Porras in the primary for Florida House District 105 because she is the most electable in the general election.
- Republicans should pick Bibiana Potestad in the primary for Florida House District 105 because she is the most electable in the general election.

- West Broward Democrats have a clear choice for House District 104: Robin Bartleman.
- Christine Hunschofsky deserves voters' support in House District 96.
- Palm Beach School Board chairman Frank Barbieri — a real champion of public schools — deserves a fourth term.
- Debra Hixon deserves your vote for Broward School Board because of her 31-year pedigree as a high school teacher, magnet program manager and swim coach. Also, because of how she’s responded to the horror at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Endorsement: Heather Brinkworth offers strong, steady hand in Broward School Board, District 3, race
Incumbent Broward School Board member Heather Brinkworth faces challenger Sarah Leonardi in the District 3 seat in the Aug. 18 election. Both candidates are strong, but for a number of reasons stated here, the Sun Sentinel endorses Brinkworth for re-election. - Rep. Bobby DuBose has been a steady if unspectacular hand, and he knows this district. Voters should re-elect him.
- A face-off between two Democrats in central Broward's Florida House District 95 features a progressive new face, Jasmen Rogers-Shaw, and a one-term incumbent, Anika Omphroy. The Sun Sentinel believes Rogers-Shaw is the better candidate.
- The Sun Sentinel recommends Silmo Moura in the Republican primary for Florida House District 81.
- Al Jacquet does not deserve a third term in the Florida House because he is not fighting for District 88. Omari Hardy is who the people need.
- Two very good Democrats — Kelly Skidmore and Michael Weinstein — are running in the primary for Florida House District 81. Skidmore’s experience tips the balance for the Sun Sentinel’s endorsement.
- In crowded Florida Senate race, Shevrin "Shev" Jones is best choice
- For Florida Senate District 33, the Sun Sentinel endorses re-election of state Sen. Perry Thurston.
- Former Rep. Irv Slosberg is not the man for this moment or this party. In the Florida Senate, Rep. Tina Polsky is the better candidate to represent District 29, which includes Boca Raton and portions of Broward County west of Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach.
- The South Florida Sun Sentinel Editorial Board's endorsements in the local elections that appear on the Aug. 18, 2020 ballot.
- After 24 years in the office, Sarahnell Murphy knows what works and what needs to change at the Broward State Attorney’s office. She has the brains, experience and temperament to inject some empathy into the system without sacrificing public safety. Her track record sets her apart from the other seven candidates in the race.
- Rep. Frederica Wilson is the much better choice in Florida's Congressional District 24.
- Four Republicans are competing for the nomination to challenge six-term incumbent Ted Deutch in the 22nd Congressional District. James “Jim” Pruden of Coconut Creek is the Republican who’s best prepared to make a fight of it.
- The Sun Sentinel editorial board strongly recommends the re-nomination of Florida Rep. Lois Frankel in the Democratic primary for U.S. House, District 21.
- For Republican voters in U.S. House, District 23, Michael Kroske is a more competitive nominee than Carla Spalding. And if elected, he would be the more responsible member of Congress.
- The Sun Sentinel editorial board enthusiastically endorses Debbie Wasserman Schultz in House District 23. She has served with distinction and is a leader among peers.
- Vic DeGrammont and Greg Musselwhite are the Republican candidates vying in the August 18 primary to take on the challenge of converting one of the nation’s bluest seats — U.S. House District 20 — in November.

- In the race for Broward Public Defender, Gordon Weekes is best prepared to succeed “Help me Howard” Finkelstein.

- Palm Beach County Judge Debra Moses Stephens faces a well-prepared challenger in Jaianna Seaborne. Of the three Palm Beach judicial races on the August ballot, this is the closest call.
- Elect incumbent Judge Phoebee Francois in Broward County Court, Group 27; her opponent, Jacob Segal, is an unimpressive candidate.
- Judge Natasha DePrimo is an impressive judge. Her opponents can’t match her credentials in this race for Broward County Court, Group 31.
- Select Allison Gilman in Broward County Court, Group 22, because she’s spent far more time in the courthouse than her opponent, Casey Mills.
- Linda Alley is the only option in the race for Broward Circuit Court, Group 50, because the incumbent judge, Vegina "Gina" Hawkins is under investigation.
- Re-elect Judge Dale Cohen to the Broward Circuit Court bench, Group 30. His opponent, former Judge Ian Richards, does not measure up.
- Incumbent Judge Dennis Bailey faces two good challengers for the Broward Circuit Court, Group 16 bench, but he deserves to be re-elected.
- Broward Circuit Judge Frank Ledee has the brains, experience and temperament to handle tough cases, and provides needed diversity on the bench. He is the better choice over Meredith Chaiken-Weiss and Matthew Destry.
